Beach House is one of the few indie artists today that makes music which is not only beautiful, delicate and ethereal but translates incredibly well in live performance. This short film, a great introduction to the band’s current music, is a stellar example.
Although the short film is nearly two years old, I thought it was worth sharing on this blog because I only discovered it recently and the dream-pop music itself fits the atmosphere of a chilly month like October very nicely.
The concept of “Forever Still” is really breathtaking. Inspired by a Pink Floyd documentary film, Beach House wanted to perform four songs from sunset to sunrise. The goal also consisted of minimal edits, long takes and a focus on the energy of the songs, landscape, and physicality of live performance.
Recorded in or around Tornillo, Texas, Beach House intended the film to be experienced as a whole, long form. Although it nears 30 minutes in length, “Forever Still” is definitely worth a watch. It is quite amazing to just see their vision executed!
The four songs performed in this short film—“Wild”, “The Hours”, “Wishes”, and “Irene”—are from the band’s fourth studio album Bloom. Both Bloom and the band’s previous release Teen Dream are excellent albums for first-time listeners.
I recommend taking time from your day to watch this video to revel in the mere beauty of the sounds, the visuals and the performance as a whole. In a world where quantity is rewarded over quality, Beach House’s lovely, almost magical short film sets a high artistic standard even now.
