Jamie xx - Sleep Sound (Girl / Sleep Sound EP Out May 5)

Last Thursday, Jamie xx dropped his first solo release since 2011’s Far Nearer”. The song, titled Sleep Sound”, is a lush and sedative instrumental dance track made for late night listening.

Sleep Sound” starts out with a gorgeous, twinkling organic instrument that begins to swirl and activate as the vocal cuts are put into place. Then, the drums and pulsing dancehall-style beats play as the music begins to rise in and out like the tide of the ocean. The deep, aquatic bass and soothing vocal loops are also integral parts to the track.

Jamie xx’s electronic gem can fit the genre of subtle dance music and is almost minimal in its treatment. Sleep Sound” is also ideal for waking up in the early hours of the morning.

I first heard a version of this track teased on Jamie xx’s BBC Radio 6 mix. I didn’t like it then, but now that the official cut is out I really do appreciate the precision of the production.

I also enjoy the fact that this is an inherently instrumental track. Although there are vocal loops in the song, there are no actual lyrics.

Jamie xx is really putting the spotlight on his own marvelous beat-making abilities, and it’s clear that he’s not ashamed of it.

Check out Sleep Sound” below, and be sure to pre-order Girl / Sleep Sound, out in May:
