Modern Vampires Of The City
Vampire Weekend announced on Monday that their third album is titled “Modern Vampires Of The City”. Slated to be out May 7th in the U.S., the sound has been previously described as “darker” and more “organic”, according to an interview with Q Magazine.
The black-and-white cover artwork was also revealed on Monday, designed by Rostam Batmanglij (the band’s producer and multi-instrumentalist). The photo is by Neal Boenzi from November 24, 1966—the smoggiest day in New York City’s history.
I really like the title of the album. In addition, the cover artwork is just stunning. It’s moody, mysterious and even nostalgic.
I am beyond excited for this release! This is the band’s first studio album since 2010. Although no singles have been released yet, I believe this record will be their best effort to date.
Vampire Weekend is also set to play at SXSW this spring. I saw them at the House of Blues Cleveland in July 2012 where they debuted “Unbelievers”.
I first heard this band in 8th grade through the speakers of an iMac at the photography studio where my dad works. I was immediately hooked with the piping, sunny sounds of Rostam’s keyboard on “Mansard Roof” and the shimmering guitar on “Campus”. The lead singer is Jewish and the producer/keyboardist is gay, so I can really relate and connect with the band. What an amazing feeling!
If you’ve never heard Vampire Weekend, I recommend checking out their music on iTunes. I also embedded a YouTube playlist from the band’s record label with music videos:
