Other Favorite Artists: The Drums, Atlas Sound and Jamie xx
The Drums is my second favorite band.
The Drums formed in Brooklyn, New York in the spring of 2009 and released their first EP, Summertime!, in October 2009. I discovered that EP on iTunes in 2010 and snatched it up as soon as I could. It had 7 of the catchiest songs I had ever heard.
They sing about love and make consistently great pop music that is reminiscent of the late 50s and early 60s.
The band has two other albums: The Drums and Portamento. They’re both really good, but Summertime! is what got me hooked. Unfortunately, Summertime! is no longer available on iTunes, but you can still get the rest of the albums here.
You can watch some of their videos below, or check out these fantastic remixes on RCRD LBL.
Another artist I love is Bradford Cox, also known as Atlas Sound. He writes his music stream-of-consciousness (not writing lyrics in advance).

An interesting fact about him is that he was born with the genetic disorder Marfan syndrome. He has been making music since he was a child, and the name of his project is derived from the brand of tape player he used, Atlas Sound.
You can check out the Atlas Sound song “Walkabout” on 4AD’s website or stream his latest release from 2011, Parallax, over at NYTimes.com.
Finally, one of my favorite producers and remix artists is Jamie Smith (Jamie xx) from the London-based band The xx. He has an amazing self-produced single “Far Nearer” that uses a catchy steel drum sample. Hear it below:
