Pop Duos to Cure the Winter Blues
“Winter blues” you say? I’ve got the perfect antidotes!
G A L P A L S are a female pop duo from Austin, Texas composed of Jillian Talley and Lauren Marie Mikus. They are releasing their first single “For Our Sake” on Monday, February 18. I heard them for the first time when they opened for Vampire Weekend in July 2012.
Their music is different from what most people would consider pop because it is in the style of garage-pop. The track is fuzzy yet cheerful, with a rebellious touch. It’s definitely the sound of summer 2013! Check it out below!

Next, I recommend “Long Boat Pass” by Tennis.
Tennis, from Denver, Colorado, is made up of husband-and-wife duo Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley. I first heard their song on the mix below from Idealize LA.
This song from their 2011 album “Cape Dory” reminds me of springtime, which is why I like listening to it in the dead of winter. It’s a breezy, shimmering pop gem and has a very catchy chorus. The words—“Darling you know I love you”—are perfect for hearing during the lonely months of winter. It’s a true testament to the fact that music can take you on a journey. I think everyone should play this on repeat in their car because it is such a delightful, fantastic song.

Finally, I discovered “I Love It” by Swedish pop duo Icona Pop in 2012. I found the track on the Brazilian music blog Oh My Rock via the Hype Machine, a website that tracks the latest songs from music blogs worldwide. Hear their song below:
