Real Estate - Talking Backwards (Atlas Out March 4)
Real Estate announced a follow-up to their 2011 LP Days, titled Atlas, due out March 4 in the U.S. Alongside Monday’s record announcement, the New Jersey band released a single from the forthcoming album:
The track, “Talking Backwards”, is perfect for walking around a college campus on a spring afternoon. Spanning just over three minutes, it features breezy, layered guitar arrangements, honey-sweet vocals and bass as well as cool drums and a touch of shoegaze elements.
Hallmark of this song, however, is the production. Each of the instruments in this track really glow and work together in a way that we haven’t heard from Real Estate before. The song gives us not only a taste of what to expect on the band’s third LP, but in the approaching months of spring.
The lyrics of “Talking Backwards” are more personal and reflective than previous Real Estate songs. I really do like how the sentiments of lead singer Martin Courtney’s songwriting are up to personal interpretation.
For example, he sings: “And I might as well be talking backwards / Am I making any sense to you?” A listener could take those words to mean anything based on his/her personal experiences.
Furthermore, this shows that love doesn’t always have to be black-and-white. It can be more gray.
“Talking Backwards” is a song that begs for us to genuinely feel our emotions, whether they are romantic or not or anywhere in between. It’s something magnificent, and it’s something we can all relate to.
