Tame Impala - Disciples
Following new tracks “Let It Happen” and “’Cause I’m a Man”, Tame Impala have shared the latest cut from their forthcoming album Currents. The song is titled “Disciples”, and you can hear it above.
Personally, this might be my favorite new single from the band yet. Although it’s less than two minutes, the song has seriously catchy guitar riffs and melody with an underlying pop influence.
This poppier sound is a key shift in the band’s music. Listening back to their previous album Lonerism, tracks like “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards” had drums that weren’t so crisply defined as well as a rockier, crunchier musical backbone. The lo-fi atmosphere and psychedelic punch remains here on “Disciples”, but the drums and other instruments are played with a noticeable added confidence.
These latest singles show that Tame Impala is not afraid of venturing into new pop territory. Lonerism was a stepping-stone, but what we’ve heard of Currents is the definitive new direction for the group.
Through experimentation of melody and production, Tame Impala have created music that is both immediate to the listener and memorable in its appeal. And that’s really exciting, because it makes for even more fun, enjoyable listening.
