What I’ve been listening to: May/June 2017

There is so much good new music out lately! Instead of blogging about it all individually, here’s a list of my favorites from the past month or so:

Amber Coffman - City of No Reply: This is a really fantastic debut album from former Dirty Projectors member Amber Coffman. What I’m loving about this album is how introspective and direct the songwriting is. There are many different styles and paces of songs, too, but it feels like a complete, cohesive package. Indie rock rarely feels this satisfying and fun to listen to. (A-)

Perfume Genius - No Shape: From the opener to the finish, this is a brilliant record and work of art. There are so many instrumental layers and textures in No Shape, and this variety makes it thrilling to listen to. Perfume Genius is a standout in today’s indie music scene, and this album is not to miss in my opinion. (A)

The xx - I See You: The xx truly shine on their latest release from January, I See You. It includes the atmospheric indie pop style the band is known for, with lovely, amped up production and vocals you’ll swoon over. This album is perfect for a rainy afternoon pick-me-up, working, or relaxing at home with a good set of headphones. I’m sure it will gain repeat plays for months to come. (A-)

Grizzly Bear - Mourning Sound (Single): Grizzly Bear are back with a new album soon, and this single from it is a real delight. My only complaint is that at times it sounds a little disjointed, but the melodies and deep, grungy bass are especially soothing to hear. (B)

Arcade Fire - Everything Now (Single): I’m really excited for new Arcade Fire! Everything Now” is a grand, anthemic tune, and it will be interesting to see how the rest of the album will sound. (B+)

Toro y Moi - Girl Like You (Single): Okay, this song was released today, but it is one of my favorite Toro y Moi songs I’ve heard. It’s groovy and more pop-oriented but rooted in chillwave. If the rest of the new album turns out this good, this could be one of my top albums of the year. (A)
